If you are a frequent traveller, either for business or pleasure, then you will know the stress that comes with packing and transporting all of your belongings, especially if you are traveling as a family or a large group. The trouble that a lot of people have is trying to fit all of their bags into their car.
There are, however, some things that you can do in order to make things easier for yourself and one of those is to invest in a car roof box. There are a lot of different brands on the market at the moment and you will want to make sure that you purchase a high quality box.
One of the top brands at the moment is Thule. There are several models available and you will want to make sure that you choose the right one for you. Because of that, we have decided to test and review some of the best Thule Karrite Roof Boxes to give you a better idea of your options. Please read on below for more information.
3. Thule Ocean 600 Car Roof Box
Features: 330L Capacity – 3 Point Central Locking System – 2 Keys – 50kg Maximum Load Capacity – Full UV Protection – 14kg Weight
- Very secure thanks to the three point locking system.
- Very big maximum load capacity of 50kg.
- You can fit a lot into the box thanks to the large 330L capacity.
- Full UV protection protects the box from the elements.
- The material feels a little too light and flimsy.
- It is quite expensive for something that doesn’t feel very durable.
The first Thule Karrite roof box that we wanted to add to our list after testing is the Ocean 600. One of the more affordable options, we were fairly impressed with this one. The first thing that we liked was the full UV protection. This prevents the colour from fading very well and it’s a really nice feature to have.
It is worth mentioning that this does have quite a small capacity of 330L. However, for a small family taking a short break, this is more than sufficient. There is a maximum load capacity of 50kg which again, is plenty. We also really liked the three point locking system; we felt that this roof box was definitely secure.
We did, however, have a couple of issues with this one. Firstly, we felt that it was a little expensive considering it is quite basic. As well as this, we thought that the materials felt a little flimsy in comparison to some of the others that we tested.
Although we did have a few minor niggles with this one, we would still recommend this roof box to anyone looking for a more affordable option from a very reputable brand.
2. Thule 634800 Touring L-780
Features: 300L Capacity – 3 Point Central Locking System – 75kg Maximum Load Capacity – 15kg Weight – Full UV Protection
- Full UV protection so no risk of the box fading.
- Plenty of room despite the fairly small capacity.
- Low noise even on motorways at high speed.
- Very easy to mount.
- Water seeped through the box in heavy rain.
- The locks are difficult to close with too much in the box.
The next on our list of the best Thule Karrite roof boxes is the Touring L-780. We chose this one because of the nice, compact design. There were actually numerous points with this one that left us feeling quite impressed.
First of all, we liked that this one also included full UV protection. We didn’t experience any fading of the colour of the box at all. Another thing that we liked was that despite the capacity of this roof box only being 300L, we were actually able to still fit quite a lot inside the box.
We were expecting the box to be quite noisy when driving at speed because the design isn’t exactly streamlined, so we were really surprised by the low noise levels even when driving at high speeds on the motorway. Now, as we mentioned, there are a couple of issues that we had.
First of all, we noticed that water seeped through some parts of this roof box during spells of heavy rain. This can be rectified by using waterproof covers inside the box, but it was a little disappointing. Another issue that we had was that the locks were difficult to close with even slightly too much packed inside.
Aside from these two points, we were actually very satisfied with this roof box and would definitely recommend it if you are prepared to buy waterproof covers to go on the inside.
1. Thule 629701 Roof Box – The Best Choice
Features: 500L Capacity – 3 Point Central Locking System – 2 Keys – 75kg Maximum Load Capacity – 26.5kg Weight – Full UV Protection
- Very nice stylish design.
- Huge 500L capacity to fit plenty inside.
- Very generous 75kg maximum load capacity.
- Very easy to mount onto your car.
- Quite expensive in comparison to some of the other options that we have reviewed.
- We found that it was easier to mount the roof box with 2 people.
Finally, number one on our list of the best Thule Karrite roof boxes is the 629701. It is important to note that this is quite expensive in comparison to most of the other roof boxes that we have reviewed, but it is definitely worth the extra money.
The design is what initially attracted us to this roof box. It looks incredibly sleek and stylish; not bulky at all. One of our favourite features of this roof box is the massive 500L capacity. We were able to fit very large amounts inside the roof box with no issues at all. There is also a very generous 75kg maximum load capacity.
The mounting process was actually a lot easier than we had first anticipated. However, we would definitely recommend that two people are on hand to mount the roof box because it is quite large and we found it much easier with two people.
Overall, we were hugely impressed with this roof box and that is why it definitely takes the top spot on our list today.
We hope that you are now able to make a decision on the best Thule Karrite roof boxes and you are satisfied with your choice.
